The library was founded in 1947 by a group of students and teachers of the former Regional Institute for Social Services. Although it initially served a small group of users, it has kept on growing and today it serves as a referral source for any professional working in Social Services and Social Policies, also for those from the contiguous regions. Despite all the inconveniences caused by the suspension of the purchase of foreign monographs  and periodicals, the library is still an asset for those willing to do research and to keep themselves up to date, such as social assistance and social education operators, university students, researchers, but also common people with some kind of interest in social work and social policies.

In accordance with the Provincial law n. 12 /1987 our library adheres to Trentino’s Integrated Library System, while its bibliographic records have been added to the CBT (Central Catalogue of Trentino’s Libraries) since 1989, as provided for by the Provincial law n. 16/1981. This way, the library services are now intended for the general benefit of the community.

Since year 2000 the library manages, together with its holdings, the “Research Records on volunteering and disabilities” of the Cooperative La Rete.

The areas of specialization are within the field of Social Policies, with a special attention for Social Needs, Social Services, Health and Social Care, Addictions, Social Marginalization, NPO, Volunteering, Social and Developmental Psychology and Pedagogy.

The book holdings (available on the CBT – Central Catalogue of Trentino’s Libraries) include more than 21.600 monographs and 1.100 periodicals  (over 300 of which are current ones). In addition to these, a large number of scientific publications from the Regional Institute for Social Services and from the Regional Institute for Social Studies and Research (the Foundation took over the latter) have also been added to the digitized catalogue.

The purchase of foreign monographs and periodicals  has been suspended since November 2005.

Despite being not included in the CBT Catalogue, the book holdings hold:

  • 722 theses completed by social work students graduated in Trento from 1948 to 1992;
  • 431 theses completed by Education students graduated in Trento up to 2003

The loan period is 30 days (it is anyway possible to renew items for a  further 30 day period). Users can borrow up to 3 items (near-graduates, Ph.D. candidates and teachers can borrow up to 5 items).

For detailed information, please refer to the Library Rules and Regulations.

The Library is also member of AIB (Italian Library Association).
